Word families are words that share spelling and sound patterns, also know as phonograms. Teaching children word patterns helps with decoding and spelling in addition to, building phonemic awareness - a key to success in reading. Last week we explored words such as 'cat,' 'fat' 'bat,' 'rat,' 'mat,' 'sat,' and 'that' which are all examples of words that are in the '-at' family. Through this experience, the children were able to see how many words looked alike at the end, and sounded alike too — a valuable discovery about our alphabetic writing system! A special thank you to @youclevermonkey for these wonderful interactive learning mats. These simple (yet very effective) resources encouraged an active, kinesthetic and creative means to exploring our 'at' word family - which truly engaged ALL of our learners! It was a fun, independent, tactile experience, that proved to be a great way to consolidate their knowledge during our literacy groups!
